What is Thermowelding

“But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent... wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers.”

How Miranda Priestly felt about the color of the collection she was featuring in Runway magazine is almost like how our team at Uwila Warrior feels about underwear fabric education: passionate, enthralled, and fully aware that most people probably don’t think about the behind-the-scenes makings of their underwear. But that’s okay! We love to learn and love to teach anyone who’s interested, because the modern woman deserves to know what she’s buying and the quality and care that went into it—especially when it comes to your lingerie.

So last week, we talked handwashing. This week, allow us to introduce you to the process of thermowelding.

Thermowelding 101

Also known as “heat bonding” or simply “bonding” in the fashion industry, thermowelding is an innovative way to construct a garment that doesn’t involve the traditional sewing method you see on Project Runway. Instead, thermowelding consists of using bonding machines to develop seams with a very thin tape, which creates an adhesion under high temperatures.

It’s perfect for intimates, since it helps the garment lay flat and closer to the body. That, in turns, means the end result is less bulky than a garment with a traditional seam, less abrasive, and much more comfortable against your skin. It also rubs less on the clothing you wear over it. In addition, it’s great for adding decorative applications, and the machines we use are environmentally efficient.

Thermowelding & Uwila Warrior

Thermowelding is part of what makes our Happy Seams underwear line appear invisible under tight-fitting garments. Take, for instance, our Glow In the Dark Happy Seams underwear. Made from hi-tech, lightweight, blended fabric, this pair features our signature little owl logo thermowelded on the back.

It’s also tagless and elastic-free—nope, no elastic on that waistband—and can be washed on the gentle cycle in your washing machine. (The waistband is thermowelded, which helps prevent the garment from rolling down from the top—a huge plus!) It’s a no-brainer choice when you know you’ll be up front and center giving a speech or wearing a dress out to dinner. Or, honestly, for every moment of your day and night. Seamless, beautiful, and comfortable; what more could you ask for in underwear?
