There’s just something special about wearing silk underwear. Not only is it insanely soft and comfortable—not to mention beautiful—but it also has some serious benefits. So if you love the look and feel of it, you may be wondering: Is it good to wear silk underwear? The answer is a resounding yes. Keep reading to find out silk underwear benefits, including why it’s breathable, healthy to wear, and more.

Is silk underwear breathable?

Technically speaking, the only part of your body that needs to “breathe” are your lungs. But in underwear lingo, we talk about breathability in the sense that the fabric helps keep you dry and cool. And, yes, silk does just that.

“Silk fiber in itself has a lot of space and air in its microscopic structure, which allows air to pass through it,” explains Samantha Benassai, head of product at Uwila Warrior. That airy structure also allows it its natural wicking properties. “Anytime there’s heat emanating from your body, the fiber won’t act as a barrier to that and will allow heat to pass through and aerate outward,” says Benassai. The same goes for sweat: “And if there’s any moisture, such as sweat, it will allow that to dissipate and evaporate off the surface of the fabric. So you’re not trapping any of that to the body.”

That’s precisely why our Soft Silk Briefs and Soft Silk Thongs are made from 100% natural silk. Both styles are also finished with stretch lace finishes at the waist and leg openings that won't pinch or pull.

Is silk underwear healthy?

Yes, silk undergarments are healthy to wear because of silk’s categorization as a natural fiber. “It comes from an uncontaminated source from nature,” says Benassai. But in a more simple and tangible way, silk is also just more gentle on the skin. “Silk is also hypoallergenic. For people who deal with eczema or sensitive skin, it’s not going to exacerbate any of that,” she explains. In addition, silk is highly resistant to dust mites.

What are the benefits of wearing silk underwear?

In addition to the breathability and health benefits listed above, there are even more benefits to wearing silk underwear. The most obvious one likely being that it has that super-soft, luxurious hand-feel you love.

Second, it molds to your body. “The silk fabric Uwila Warrior uses is knit so it has a natural stretch to it,” says Benassai. “Even though we don’t add any elastane, the knit fabric provides four-way stretch.” And that gorgeous lace trim won’t create any unnecessary lumps or bumps either. “The lace isn’t going to pinch or tug because the stretch is so light,” she says.

There’s also an environmental benefit to wearing silk: Fabrics also naturally shed fibers as they are worn and washed. Those shed from natural fibers can then biodegrade, according to the CFDA.

What are the benefits of silk long underwear?

Styles like our Silk Base Layer have the breathability benefits above, and are also great for wearing in cold weather without adding a lot of bulk. Made with 20% silk and 80% nylon, it’s the perfect blend of breathability, warmth, and stretch for retaining its shape wear after wear. If you’re looking for silk underwear for warmth for winter, it makes a great first layer. But it’s so cute, we love wearing this top on its own with jeans!
