Uwila Woman of the Month: Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama is not just the First Lady of the United States; she’s an inspiration to women worldwide. Among her many titles are lawyer, author, the only African American First Lady in history, and of course, devoted mother and wife.
Who is Michelle Obama?
Michelle was raised in Chicago, Illinois, where she was always an overachiever in school. We’re talking honor roll, student council, and AP classes. It’s no wonder she graduated high school second in her class and went on to attend Princeton University, despite teachers’ advice that she was “setting her sights too high.”
Michelle Obama received her Bachelor's in sociology with a minor in African American studies, and later graduated from Harvard Law School not knowing that she would eventually become the third First Lady to earn a graduate degree.
Michelle started work at a law firm, where she was assigned to mentor a summer associate - named Barack Obama. They were engaged within two years, married, and had two daughters. Michelle left her job at the law firm for a career in public service, holding positions at the University of Chicago and University of Chicago Hospitals.
3 Reasons We Love Her
- She’s down to earth. Getting to see Michelle Obama in casual media appearances where her genuine personality shines through is always a joy. It reminds us that she’s human, and fun! This carpool karaoke video with James Corden says it all.
- Along with being a strong advocate for healthy families and service members, Michelle Obama is very passionate about helping young women around the world get the education they deserve. She launched the “Let Girls Learn” initiative, which is founded on her belief in the power of educating women to transform their communities.

- She’s an independent woman. The fashion-forward First Lady not only chose her own outfit to wear on the cover of Vogue magazine, but she also personally wrote the speech that brought the house down at the Democratic National Convention in 2012.
Little Known Fact
Michelle Obama wasn’t initially in favor of her husband’s presidential campaign. A woman who takes her role as a mother very seriously, Michelle had reservations that the campaign would have a negative effect on their young daughters. Of course, as Barack’s campaign advanced she became his biggest supporter and cut back on time at the office to spend more time with the children.
Our Favorite Quote
“When I get up and work out, I'm working out just as much for my girls as I am for me, because I want them to see a mother who loves them dearly, who invests in them, but who also invests in herself. It's just as much about letting them know as young women that it is okay to put yourself a little higher on your priority list.”
